Greetings and Namaste. I'm Kailash Joshi and I welcome you to our HSCI Wellness Series of Sessions. This particular session is a very important one to me and it is about aging gracefully. That, as we all know, is easier said than done. But it is a subject that is so important for us to really focus on and see if we can make some improvements.

So, by the way, I just want to make sure that I tell you that I'm not a psychologist or a therapist. I'm simply a coach and a guide. And I have achieved this particular capability and expertise by living a life with many ups and downs and many tragedies and happiness moments. And yet I was able to balance things out through the ways I approach things, through the way I apply different philosophies and ideas to my life. And I now freely share these with other people when there's an occasion to do so.

So our session will begin by us talking about you and taking an inventory of your typical days, activities, routines, and things that you do, and things that also are positive and things that are negative. That will help us get our discussion going in the right direction.

We will then talk about different concepts and ideas and philosophies. I will share over eight to ten of these that I have developed over these years. We will kind of mix and mash, go back and forth, discuss these things, and see if we can come to some agreements about those things that are important and perhaps can be improved in your life. If there are things that we need to do more work on, we will agree on that too.

At the end, we will summarize by me describing to you some ideas and activities that you can try and see how these work for you. Please do remember that ultimate results are going to be on how well you grasp these ideas, practice them, track them for progress, and so on and so forth. I cannot guarantee success or positive outcome.

With that, I say welcome and thank you.

Can we grow older without growing fearful, isolated or less fulfilled? Aging gracefully is not simply about staying healthy. It is about developing a way of thinking and living that helps us face life’s inevitable challenges while maintaining a realistic, positive outlook toward today and the years ahead.

As we grow older, life can throw many things at us: health concerns, loss of loved ones, changing relationships, retirement and, sometimes, an unsettling amount of free time to worry about what might go wrong. The key is not to avoid these challenges, but to learn how to respond to them with resilience, purpose and perspective.

Over the years, Dr. Kailash Joshi has consciously developed a way of living that enables him to maintain health, wellness and meaningful engagement while continuing to contribute to society. In his Aging Gracefully sessions, he will engage in a dialogue with you, understand your circumstances and way of thinking, and share practical approaches that have given his own life a continuing sense of meaning and worth.

Among his recommendations are nurturing close relationships, pursuing hobbies and interests, staying physically and mentally active, continuing to learn, contributing to others, and finding purpose beyond one’s former professional identity.

His approach to aging is therefore not merely theoretical. It reflects a lifetime of experience in adapting to change, overcoming adversity, staying engaged and finding new ways to make a difference.

Aṣṭadala padma, the eight-petalled lotus

Dr. Joshi is a coach and a guide rather than a psychologist or a therapist. A session runs in three movements:

  1. An inventory of your typical days: activities, routines, what is working and what is not. That sets the direction of the discussion.
  2. Concepts, ideas and philosophies: he will share eight to ten he has developed over the years, and you will go back and forth over which of them matter to you.
  3. A summary of ideas and activities for you to try, and to see how they work for you.

His own account of where this expertise comes from is plain: a life with many ups and downs, many tragedies and happy moments, balanced through the way he approaches things. He is equally plain about the limits: the results depend on how well you grasp the ideas, practise them and track your progress, and no success or positive outcome can be guaranteed.
